VFX house One Of Us releases ‘The Zone of Interest’ showreel

The film was nominated for five Academy Awards.

One of the best films of this awards season is Jonathan Glazer’s stunning, and very disturbing WWII film The Zone Of Interest and the film has been picking up Best Film gongs left, right, and centre, including at the recent Oscars where it was presented with the International Feature award. The film isn’t specifically known for its VFX, but check out this interesting new showreel from production outfit One Of Us who show off the subtle work they did on the film. The Zone of Interest VFX shows backgrounds being altered, and objects added and taken away, and is a very interesting watch indeed.

The Zone of Interest VFX

“Much has been said about the banality of evil, but no films say it better than The Zone Of Interest as its horror revels in the mundane surrounding one of history’s biggest atrocities.”

From our review of The Zone of Interest, February 2024

The feature was made in a specific way where static cameras were used to give the actors as much of a natural habitat to act within. That meant that in some scenes the cameras were visible in the frame so One Of Us was one of those tasked with getting them removed, amongst other work in the film, too.

The VFX company has worked on everything from The Crown to Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin movie, The Sandman to Netflix’s big-budget fantasy Damsal.

Directed by Jonathan Glazer, starring Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller, The Zone of Interest revolves around the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.

The Zone of Interest VFX reel runs for a short time but is an interesting look behind the scenes of a remarkable piece of work.

The video can be viewed below. The Zone of Interest is now streaming on premium video on-demand channels ahead of a physical and digital release in he near future.
