Some news now about a film which was screened for the very first time at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A Real Pain is Jesse Eisenberg’s latest film as director and indeed co-star, and it is really rather excellent. The feature was snapped up at the festival by Searchlight Pictures who have just given it a release date – in U.S. cinemas at least. A Real Pain UK release is surely not far behind.
A Real Pain will debut in a limited release stateside from 10th March (as per The Playlist) which firstly means it has a nice little awards-qualifying run, and the opportunity to screen at the late 2024 festivals. Kieran Culkin, Will Sharpe, Jennifer Grey, Ellora Torchia, Kurt Egylawan, Liza Sadovy, and Daniel Oreskes lead the main cast of the movie alongside Eisenberg.
The film focuses on Eisenberg and Culkin’s characters – cousins Dave and Beji – who venture to Poland to visit the place of their late grandma’s birth before her fleeing World War II.
A film that made me laugh out loud many times also has its heartfelt moments, too, again a lot coming from Kieran Culkin’s performance. The two leads are there for personal reasons, but get caught up in the devastating history of the country. Eisenberg’s camera portrays Poland for its beauty, which contrasts with the reactions of Benji. The scenes in Lublin strike you immediately, which differs from the scenes later on when the group visit the concentration camp. Eisenberg doesn’t heap on the sentiment choosing to underplay the scenes which ultimately makes it more powerful.
The release news was also confirmed on Searchlight’s ‘X’ feed.
This will feature in the next awards season in some capacity and we can’t wait to see it again. A Real Pain UK release date will surely be around the same kind of time due to the nature of Searchlight releasing their films. We’ll keep you posted on that.
