Here’s some great news to start a brand new week. A War of the Roses remake looks like it is very much on the cards with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman leading the cast as a well-off warring couple intent on finishing one another off through a messy break-up.
It is, of course, a re-do of the 1980s movie which starred Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner and Danny DeVito, all uniting for the first time since their brilliant double header of Romancing The Stone and The Jewel Of The Nile. The 1989 feature, which was directed by DeVito itself was based on the 1981 novel of the same name by Warren Adler. Jay Roach will direct with Tony McNamara writing the screenplay for new one.
Deadline reported the news and has some details on the plot.
“Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo (Cumberbatch) and Ivy (Colman): successful careers, great kids, an enviable sex life. But underneath the façade of the perfect family is a tinderbox of competition and resentments that’s ignited when Theo’s professional dreams come crashing down.”
The film is in active development at Searchlight Pictures, home of screenwriter McNamara and Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things. McNamara adapted the source material for that movie for the big screen with huge success for all involved.
We look forward to the War of the Roses remake – it is one of the true great movies of the late-eighties. If you haven’t seen it we urge you to track it down.
Here’s the trailer.
