A film version of Richard Osman’s novel The Thursday Night Murder Club is on the way with Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan and Ben Kingsley lining up to lead the cast of the adaptation. Home Alone and Harry Potter filmmaker Chris Columbus is directing the film which is set up over at Amblin Entertainment. The Thursday Night Movie Club film has been in the offing since the rights were bought in 2019 before the publication of the novel.
The British author’s four books have been hugely popular, selling in their millions around the world.
The plot synopsis for this one is as follows (via Amazon):
In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves the Thursday Murder Club. When a local developer is found dead with a mysterious photograph left next to the body, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. As the bodies begin to pile up, can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer, before it’s too late?
Osman released the news of the casting himself through his rather-quite-brilliant podcast The Rest Is Entertainment. The Guardian reports that the novel, released in 2020, sold 45,000 copies within its first day of release and now, along with the three sequels The Man Who Died Twice, The Bullet That Missed and last year’s The Last Devil to Die, have sold 10 million copies.
Osman is also known in the UK and around the globe for co-fronting and creating hit BBC game show Pointless.
The Thursday Night Movie Club film doesn’t have a release date as yet but we’ll keep you posted.
