Great news for retro video game fans; a new Street Fighter movie is coming from Sony Pictures and Legendary. The news hit us late yesterday from the pages of Variety, but news of a new feature based on the popular Capcom title has been in the headlines for a little while.
The big news from the trade, though, is that the new Street Fighter movie has an official release date, which has been confirmed for March 2026. That’s some 32 years after the first live-action outing with Jean Claude Van Damme providing the muscles and Raul Julia, Kylie Minogue and Ming-Na Wen also starring. There was also 2009’s Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li ,which was the last movie to hit screens.
The Street Fighter franchise began back in 1987 and since then the title has shifted an impressive 49 million units through its many off-shoots and sequels, most notably 1991’s unparalleled Street Fighter II which is, and always has been one of the best reasons to go out and buy a Nintendo – in those days, the glorious SNES.
From Wikipedia, the original storyline for the original game.
The player takes control of a young Japanese martial artist named Ryu, who competes in the Street Fighter tournament to prove his strength, and the second player takes control of Ryu’s former partner and current rival Ken, who only jumps into the tournament unqualified to challenge Ryu in two-player matches.
We have no further details about the project as it has no director, cast or plot attached to it. A director is reportedly being sought ASAP after Talk To Me helmers Danny and Michael Philippou dropped out reportedly due to scheduling conflicts.
We’ll obviously keep you updated. Specifically, the film has a March 20th, 2026 release date set, so reports the trade.
Here’s the trailer for the 1994 version. Just because.
