Interview: Weston Razooli discusses ‘Riddle of Fire’

Weston Razooli’s debut feature, Riddle of Fire, took festival audiences by surprise when it began its time on the circuit in 2023. The film is a whimsical tale of childhood imagination and adventure, and is a refreshingly original story that has won over everyone that has watched it. Having already debuted in UK cinemas, Riddle of Fire arrives on both Blu-ray and Digital from 7th July.

Set in the rolling hills of Wyoming, Riddle of Fire joins three mischievous children who are tasked with collecting a blueberry pie from their local store. However, what begins as a simple errand soon evolves into an odyssey across the American West as the intrepid trio face poachers, witches, huntsmen, and fairies, who all seek to challenge them on their quest. Will the bonds of friendship prove strong enough to guide them home?

Riddle of Fire was shot on 16mm rather than digital, which helps the film feel older than its modern creation. Visually this is a film that can stand shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Stand By Me and The Goonies. We reviewed Riddle of Fire ahead of its cinema release, and in our four star review we commended writer and director Weston Razzoli’s imagination and ingenuity. Our review also described Riddle of Fire as “a charming must-see for those that embrace the strange and unusual”, and “brilliantly unique, endearingly wholesome, and utterly awesome.”

Given our reaction to the film, THN were delighted to be offered time with Weston Razzoli. We spoke ahead of the Blu-ray and Digital release about Riddle of Fire’s conception, working with children, and the importance of using 16mm over digital. Watch the conversation in its entirety in the video below:
