Road to FrightFest: ‘Derelict’ director Jonathan Zaurin & star Suzanne Fulton

Since the start of August, THN has been on the Road to FrightFest, a series of interviews with some of the fantastic talents involved with the films screening at this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest. Although having a film selected for FrightFest is always a big deal, it is an especially big one this time around as this year’s event marks the festival’s 25th anniversary. For a quarter of a century FrightFest has championed the best and brightest films on the festival circuit that embrace the dark heart of cinema. This is precisely the category that Jonathan Zaurin’s Derelict fits into.

Abigail (Suzanne Fulton) is a socially isolated, angry young woman who is struggling to come to terms with the savage death of her father some years prior. Matt (Michael Coombes) is a young man whose life gets turned upside down by the return of his brother, Ewan (Pete Bird). The destinies of these lost souls cross in ways that will tragically shape their lives. A strong and compelling addition to the library of unflinching, harsh and tough British crime films in the Shane Meadows mode, Derelict cements director Jonathan Zaurin as one of the most exciting voices working in UK genre cinema today.

The 25th Anniversary of FrightFest will host the world premiere of Derelict. Ahead of the screening, THN were able to speak with both director Jonathan Zaurin and lead actress, Suzanne Fulton. Our conversation covered how the pair were feeling about the upcoming screening, how Derelict fits under the umbrella of ‘dark heart of cinema’, and exactly why they both hope that Derelict will make it onto the watchlist of those attending the festival.

Derelict screens at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest on Sunday 25th August. More information on the film and tickets can be found on the FrightFest website.
