Filmmaker Chris Renaud on directing ‘Despicable Me 4’, playing Principal Übelschlecht and future films in the animated series

To celebrate the release of Despicable Me 4 on digital – out on 26th August – we caught up with the film’s director Chris Renaud to chat about making the fourth film in the franchise which has just been named the third biggest film of 2024 with over $800 million in box-office receipts. You can check out our Chris Renaud interview on YouTube below.

The world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain-League-agent returns for a bold new era of Minions mayhem in Illumination’s DESPICABLE ME 4, now with 2 mini-movies. Gru, Lucy and their girls welcome a new member to the family – Gru Jr. – who is intent on tormenting his dad, as a new nemesis shows up and forces the family to go on the run. This latest blockbuster chapter in the biggest global animated franchise in history is packed with nonstop action and filled with Illumination’s signature subversive humor.

The voice cast includes Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Joey King, Miranda Cosgrove, Stephen Colbert, Sofía Vergara, and Will Ferrell.

The film has had great reviews and we loved it here too. With six movies in the Illumination DM series, including the two Minions films, earnings for all have now crossed the $5 billion mark – a huge Hollywood success story.

As the film heads to the home formats, specifically digital to own and buy from the 26th August, we sat down to chat about the film, more movies in the franchise and Renaud voicing one of the film’s villains, Principal Übelschlecht. You can watch our Chris Renaud interview below.

Despicable Me 4 is available on digital from all of the usual outlets from 26th August. The feature also includes two never-before-seen Minion Mini-Movies, “Benny’s Birthday” and “Game Over and Over.”
