Ever since he attended Pigeon Shrine FrightFest in 2016 as the star of Jackson Stewart’s Beyond the Gates, Graham Skipper has been a regular at the festival. The writer, actor, director and karaoke master, has starred in at least one movie at FrightFest almost every year since 2016, making him one of the most screened actors in festival history. In 2017, Graham Skipper screened his directorial debut Sequence Break, and this year saw him return with his new movie, The Lonely Man with the Ghost Machine.
After a global catastrophe, the last man on Earth finds himself questioning his purpose and sanity as both his deceased wife and a mysterious stranger confront him with his past, his present, and whatever future might remain in the wastes of a dead world. I am Legend meets A Christmas Carol by way of cosmic H. P. Lovecraft, from FrightFest guest favourite actor/director Graham Skipper (Suitable Flesh, The Leech, Mind’s Eye, Sequence Break). A personal endeavour that allows gutsy Skipper to test his heart-felt mettle in a claustrophobic environment with an emotionally complex character. Let the madness begin!
Whereas Sequence Break was a slice of Cronenbergian sci-fi body horror, The Lonely Man with the Ghost Machine is a much more sombre and intimate affair. The film feels incredibly personal and sharing it with the FrightFest family was something that Graham Skipper was really keen to do. During the festival, and after the screening of The Lonely Man with the Ghost Machine, Graham Skipper attended the media wall for what has become THN’s almost annual catch-up with the filmmaker. We discussed the creation of The Lonely Man with the Ghost Machine, what FrightFest means, as well as his essay in the forthcoming Second Sight release of Late Night with the Devil.
