John Cena to lead ‘Matchbox’ movie

Based on the popular Mattel toy car series

John Cena has joined the cast of a big upcoming tentpole movie, one based around the popular Matchbox toy cars. The Matchbox movie has just shifted into gear by bagging a huge global star.

Skydance and Mattel Films are teaming up on the Matchbox movie project which has Extraction and Extraction 2 helmer Sam Hardgrave behind the steering wheel directing. The news comes to us via Deadline who say that the film already has a script written by David Coggeshall and Jonathan Tropper.

Matchbox is set up over at Apple and will be titled Matchbox, focussing in on the brand which dates back to 1953 when automotive enthusiast Jack Odell to solve a challenge for his daughter, who was allowed to take a toy to school only if it was small enough to fit in a matchbox. Now, two Matchbox cars are sold every second somewhere in the world, according to the trade.

If you dig deeper over on the official Mattel website for the huge global brand, it reads: “Matchbox has inspired generations of kids to unleash their imaginations! Treat your young driver to a collection of die-cast cars, new Action Drivers playsets, oversized vehicles & more.”

I had trunk fulls of these cars when I was growing up, all of which were sold at boot sales over the years. Of course, like all toys, some models have become very collectable with the most collectable reportedly being a 1961 Magirus-Deutz Crane Lorry in brown which sold in 2004 for $13,000. That was twenty years ago, so who knows what it would be worth now.

There’s huge interest in these kinds of movies, and while details around the plot for the Matchbox movie are thin on the ground as I write this, we’ll update you as more info comes our way.

Cena can currently be seen in the Amazon Prime Video movie Jackpot!, which I kinda liked, and will next shoot a second season of the hit TV series Peacemaker.
