Ariana DeBose on perfecting her knife skills for ‘House of Spoils’

Streaming on Prime Video this week.

Ariana DeBose has had an incredible few years. It began in 2020 when she was part of the ensemble for Hamilton and has only got better from there. In 2021, DeBose won an Academy Award and BAFTA for her portrayal of Anita in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story. She also provides the voice and vocals for Disney’s Wish protagonist, Asha. After spending several years working in and around musical projects, DeBose’s latest project, House of Spoils, leaves that world behind in favour of something more sinister.

From Blumhouse, House of Spoils follows an ambitious chef (Ariana DeBose) as she opens a restaurant on a remote estate where she battles kitchen chaos, crushing self-doubts… and a haunting presence who threatens to sabotage her at every turn.

Having premiered at this year’s Fantastic Fest, House of Spoils arrives on Prime Video across the globe from Thursday 3rd October. The role is a massive departure for DeBose, but the Oscar winner handles the transition to the realm of genre cinema brilliantly. Perfectly released at the start of the spooky season, House of Spoils makes for essentially Halloween time viewing. Not only does House of Spoils feature some creepy elements, it also screams autumn with every fibre of its being. The film also taps into audiences’ current obsession with food related media, the focus of House of Spoils being on the creation of the ultimate dining menu. It is certainly not a film to watch on an empty stomach.

Ahead of the release of House of Spoils on Thursday 3rd October, THN were granted some time with Ariana DeBose. Our conversation discussed the switch from singing to cooking, the intense crash-course in learning the way of Michelin star level chefs, and exactly what snack viewers should be snuggling down with for House of Spoils

House of Spoils releases globally on Prime Video on Thursday 3rd October 2024.
