A new Squid Game series looks to be in the works at Netflix and Seven and Fight Club director David Fincher may end up being behind the camera for it.
Deadline is today reporting that the planned new series would be a spin-off from the original South Korean one and be set in the United States. Fincher is reportedly eyeing up the series to develop it with it potentially being his next project at the streamer following his work on acclaimed feature The Killer which was released last November.
Netflix haven’t commented on the plans for the new Squid Game series or for Fincher to be creatively involved in the show, and there are few other details at this stage, but this is seemingly right up Fincher’s street in terms of the series’ dark tone. The trade reports that Fincher could make this the project he focusses on in 2025.
Season two of the Korean thriller is set to be released on Boxing Day, December 26th.
Season one premiered back in 2021 and is one of Netflix’s biggest hits. The follow-up season has been on many people’s watch list since it was announced.
“I do have a lot on my shoulders, but I’ll make sure it’s worth the wait,” director Hwang Dong-hyuk told Netflix in 2023.
Season two sees the return of Gi-hun who will continue to lead the series, and Season 2 picks up after his jaw-dropping decisions in the Season 1 finale.
Speaking with the streamer’s Tudum, Hwang said: “Season 2 explores how Gi-hun follows through on his words after leaving the airport.”
“Gi-hun’s endeavor to find out who these people are and why they do what they do is the core story of Season 2.”
