New ‘The Fly’ movie in the works

A new movie set in the world of The Fly, the 1980s horror movie from David Cronenberg and starring Jeff Goldblum, is said to be in the works over at 20th Century Studios and Chernin Entertainment.

Deadline reports that the film will be set in the same world as the Cronenberg movie which was released back in 1986. The planned project is in development with Nikyatu Jusu writing and directing.

The 1986 movie is about Seth Brundle, a genius scientist who develops a teleportation system where he is one day transported from one human-sized pod to another. Trouble arises when a fly is trapped in the pod alongside Brundle, leading to horrifying results.

Little is known plot-wise for the new one but this won’t be a sequel or reboot but some kind of movie set alongside the ’80s cult classic, itself an adaptation of George Langelaan’s ’50s short story that was published in the June 1957 issue of Playboy magazine.

A film adaptation with Vincent Price followed in 1958 before Cronenberg’s body-horror nearly thirty years later. Forty years on from that and this new one is on the cards.

Jusu’s 2022 work Nanny, with Anna Diop and Michelle Monaghanm, won the Grand Jury Prize in U.S. Dramatic Competition at Sundance that year before being snapped up by Amazon.

More on the new movie as it comes our way. Here’s the trailer for Cronenberg’s film.
