Christopher Nolan’s next film is ‘The Odyssey’

After what seems like months of speculation, it has finally been revealed that Christopher Nolan’s next film will be a version of Homer’s The Odyssey.

Universal officially took to social media to describe the new movie which is set to star the likes of Matt Damon, Charlize Theron, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and Lupita Nyong’o.

On the studio’s Twitter/X feed, they wrote: Christopher Nolan’s next film ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology. The film brings Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens for the first time and opens in theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.

Penguin Classics, via Amazon has the following on the story of the classic poem.

The epic tale of Odysseus and his ten-year journey home after the Trojan War forms one of the earliest and greatest works of Western literature. Confronted by natural and supernatural threats – ship-wrecks, battles, monsters and the implacable enmity of the sea-god Poseidon – Odysseus must use his bravery and cunning to reach his homeland and overcome the obstacles that, even there, await him. E. V. Rieu’s translation of The Odyssey was the very first Penguin Classic to be published, and has itself achieved classic status.

The work has been adapted into film many times before, including the Coen brothers’ 2000 work O’ Brother Where Art Thou?

Shooting is expected to start in the early part of 2025 for the summer 2026 release date to be met.
