MUBI releases a 30 minute behind the scenes featurette for ‘The Substance’

A look behind the curtain at one of the best films of 2024.

Following Demi Moore’s triumphant win at this past weekend’s Golden Globes, MUBI has debuted a lengthy behind-the-scenes for The Substance, Coralie Fargeat’s phenomenal body horror movie that was released towards the tail end of last year. You can view The Substance behind the scenes look below.

The Substance behind the scenes

Arguably the best film of last year following a huge debut at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, the film also stars Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Maid, Kinds of Kindness, Fosse Verdon), and Dennis Quaid (Far from Heaven, The Rookie, The Day After Tomorrow).

Moore leads the cast as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: THE SUBSTANCE. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twenty-something Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong?

We reviewed the film at Cannes and had the following to say about it.

A film that is sure to be divisive, The Substance is The Assistant meets Cronenberg by way of Society and Eric Prydz’s ‘Call On Me’ music video, and make no mistake, whatever your stance or interest in the genre, this feature, if you’re planning to see it, is one that has to be seen with an audience.

Yep, we loved it. The Substance behind the scenes featurette gives us a look behind the curtain and comes in at nearly thirty minutes in length, all to watch for free on YouTube via the MUBI channel.
