The 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards have just been announced and the Edward Berger-directed Conclave is leading the way with no less than 12 nods. Close behind is the Netflix film Emilia Pérez with 11 nominations and then The Brutalist with 9.
In the Best Film cateogory, those three films were lister, alongside Sean Baker’s Cannes-winning Anora, and Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown. In the Oustanding British Film Cateogory, Conclave will battle it out with Andrea Arnold’s Bird, Steve McQueen’s WWII-set Blitz, big-budget Rome epic Gladiator II from Ridley Scott, Mike Leigh’s Hard Truths, and Irish breakout film Kneecap. That film was also listed in the ‘Film Not In The English Language’ category.
14 out of 24 nominees in the performance categories have received their first BAFTA Film nomination, including Yura Borisov (Anora), Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain), Cynthia Erivo (Wicked), Karla Sofía Gascón (Emilia Pérez), Ariana Grande (Wicked), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Clarence Maclin (Sing Sing), Mikey Madison (Anora), Demi Moore (The Substance), Guy Pearce (The Brutalist), Isabella Rossellini (Conclave), Zoe Saldaña (Emilia Pérez), Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) and Jeremy Strong (The Apprentice).
Two former EE Rising Stars are nominated: Cynthia Erivo (2019), and Timothée Chalamet (2018).
In the Best Director category, three of the six are first-time Director nominees (and nominees for Original Screenplay): Sean Baker (Anora) (who has the most nominations this year, with five), Brady Corbet (The Brutalist) and Coralie Fargeat (The Substance).
BAFTA Breakthroughs are well represented: Luna Carmoon, (Director/Writer, Hoard), Natalie Rae and Angela Patton (Directors, Daughters) are Breakthrough participants from 2024 and Sarah Brocklehurst (Producer, The Outrun), Rose Glass (Director/Screenwriter, Love Lies Bleeding) and Oliver Kassman Producer, Love Lies Bleeding) are Breakthrough participants from 2019.
Warwick Davis has already been named as the 2025 BAFTA Fellowship recipient.
2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards will be dished out in London on 16 February.
