A new Gremlins movie and ‘Goonies’ film are on potentially the way, according to Deadline. Buried deep in a report on Warner Bros. Discovery who house both properties.
The article says that potential future movies are in development with Chris Columbus reportedly involved with one of them. It is unclear from the site as to whether the original Gremlins director, Joe Dante, is linked with the future project.
It is literally a one line mention in a very detailed update about Warner Bros. Discovery’s upcoming slate of project, but nonetheless. It reads:
“Franchise hopes abound down the road in Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, Practical Magic 2, DC’s Clayface and Supergirl, Drew Goddard’s incoming script for a new Matrix, a new Gremlins from Christopher Columbus and a Goonies treatment.”
Both original films were executive produced by Steven Spielberg – again, no mention at this stage of his involvement, but, as stated, there is little detail.
Gremlins, released in 1984, remains a beloved festive classic with a gadget salesman returning home one Christmas with a special gift in and old box – a Mogwai named ‘Gizmo’. All hell breaks loose when the pet is accidentally fed after midnight spawning its deadline offspring, the Gremlins of the title who wreak havoc on the small town of Kingston Falls, Pennsylvania.
The Goonies was released a year later and is equally as loved. The film revolves around a groups of misfits who stumble upon an old map and set off to fine a legendary pirate’s long-lost treasure. That film had a screenplay by Columbus and was directed by the late Richard Donner. Columbus is currently at work on the Amblin-produced, Netflix-bound adaptation of Richard Osman’s loved murder mystery novel, The Thursday Murder Club, which will be released later this year.
So, whatever this is, it is a ways off yet, if it happens at all, but the news of a new Gremlins movie or Goonies project is exciting for all of us ’80s nostalgists.
We’ll keep you posted on rumblings. More at the and of the Deadline link above.
