John Carpenter classic ‘Escape From New York’ is coming to… VHS?

Yes, you read that right. The John Carpenter classic 80s movie Escape From New York is getting a re-release on shelved format VHS.

The release is the latest VHS from Vice Press Home Video and is actually released today (15th May). According to the website, the release is PAL only, so if you are in the USA and have an NTSC player, it won’t play, sadly.

Set in 1997 (though made in 1981), Escape From New York is a cult classic and revolves around the U.S. president who crashes into Manhattan, which is now a giant maximum security prison. Only a convicted bank robber can help, Kurt Russell’s Snake Plisken, who is sent in to rescue him.

The VHS release features new cover art by Phantom City Creative, with a screenprinted tape design, and is limited to an edition of 1000. It is pretty decent as you’ll see from the grabs attached.

Now, if only we still had a VHS player knocking around.
