Richard Linklater’s Cannes stunner ‘Nouvelle Vague’ has been picked up by Netflix

Cannes Film Festival

Netflix has reportedly bought up Richard Linklater’s Cannes-debuting Nouvelle Vague (New Wave), a film about the birth of the cinema movement in France in the late 1950s/ 60s.

The teaming of Linklater and Netflix is hot off of their 2024 collaboration on the brilliant Hit Man. The deal was reported by Variety this evening.

The film is predominantly about the birth of the New Wave movement and the making of the definitive, hugely influential Breathless, written and directed by the late Jean-Luc Godard. We posted a five-star review of the film during Cannes, calling Linklater’s film, an ‘exuberant, laugh-out-loud’ blast from start to finish; a ‘billet-doux to French cinema is up there with [Linklater’s] very best.

It is hands down my fave film of the festival and it’s great that it will received a wide release on the streamer. I hope this gets a decent theatrical release, too.

More as it comes in.
