The scores for the films BLACK SWAN, TRUE GRIT, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT and THE FIGHTER have been disqualified from contention for this year’s Best Score Oscar.
According to Variety, ‘Swan’ and ‘Grit’ ‘have been deemed ineligible as “scores diluted by the use of tracked themes or other pre-existing music.”‘
‘Kids’ and ‘Fighter’ are also expected to be disqualified as scores “diminished in impact by the predominant use of songs.”
In English, BLACK SWAN and TRUE GRIT feature classical music like Swan Lake in the former, which are not 100% original. The same goes for TRUE GRIT which has a soundtrack based on old 19th Century hymns. The reason that THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT and THE FIGHTER were nixed is that the soundtracks are largely made up of songs, which while not original, do not qualify and fit within the Academy’s strict rules.
So, don’t expect to see any of the four aforementioned soundtracks listed in the Oscar noms come January.
