The whole world seems to have a outlined, luminescent blue glow to it right now with TRON fever spreading like wildfire. And it’s no shock with Disney’s past mega successes of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN and NATIONAL TREASURE, Disney are really going all out with their franchises and TRON: LEGACY being no exception with toys, games, theme park rides, comics and now the much anticipated cartoon; TRON: UPRISING.
The series, to air Summer 2012 on Disney XD, fits between the first TRON and the new installment, LEGACY where Clu (evil Jeff Bridges program) takes over the Grid. Below is an outline from Adam Horowitz, the TRON: LEGACY co-screenwriter in an interview on Box Office Magazine;
This animated show will take place from when Flynn is in a safe house. It’s from when Clu takes over the grid to before when Sam comes in. So if you were wondering what was the grid like before that, then watch the show.
Disney has also assembled a pretty impressive cast, especially for a 25 minute cartoon, with; Elijah Wood, Emmanuelle Chriqui (ENTOURAGE), Mandy Moore (A WALK TO REMEMBER), Paul Reubens (PEE WEE HERMAN), Nate Corddry (THE UGLY TRUTH), Lance Henriksen (ALIENS) and Bruce Boxleitner again taking on the role of Tron. Unsurprisingly Elijah Wood will be leading the Uprising as Beck.
The show will also explore many of the characters briefly featured in TRON: LEGACY that the film frankly had no time for such as Conrad Coates character Bartik, otherwise known as the guy with the big scar down his face.
It’s a pretty exciting project which it looks as if Disney are looking to do it right for a change. I’m also guessing that the cartoon will be in the same vein as REBOOT or BEAST WARS, completely computer generated, which would also explain the release being such a distance away. The interview mentioned and quote above is extremely interesting to any TRON fan and shows the extent of detail that the filmmakers went to concerning, back story and mythologies created to flesh out the Grid. Something rare now in an original property.
