PIRANHA 3D sequel news

Back in August, Dimension films announced plans for a sequel to the successful PIRANHA 3D and then, two months later, revealed that the director would be John Gulager and the writers would be Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton, who worked together previously on 2006’s FEAST and its sequels.

The cast for PIRANHA 3DD, has yet to be announced, though Bloody-Disgusting reports that an unexpected character could be returning for more prehistoric piranha action.  While out doing press for DEATH RACE 2, Ving Rhames revealed that his character, who seemingly perished in the movie could make a comeback.

They’re talking about [it], because you don’t necessarily see me die — and even though I’m not in the film that much, people responded to my character. So that’s why they’re talking about doing something. But I think they’re writing it as we speak.

Rhames wasn’t the only character whose fate wasn’t revealed in the movie. Paul Scheer’s cameraman simply disappears from the movie, never to be seen again. Shortly after release, Scheer took to his personal website to offer theories about his character’s disappearance, one of which he admitted seemed too unbelievable.

Sometimes a movie runs out of budget in the post process and leaves major unfinished scenes on cutting room floor.

Meanwhile, the latest Mission: Impossible sequel seemed to be a lock for Rhames‘ services as the actor announced he’d return for the sequel in August. In a recent interview with MovieWeb, however, he revealed that he might not appear.

I may be doing something very small but I will just say that the budget changed dramatically and I’ll leave it at that.

PIRANHA 3DD opens September 16, 2011
