First Official Still From West Memphis Three Biopic ‘Devil’s Knot’

Those fascinated, angered and equally disturbed by Bruce Sinofsky and Joe Berlinger’s acclaimed trio of PARADISE LOST documentaries, as well as Amy Berg’s recent WEST OF MEMPHIS, may be intrigued to see how fact-based crime biopic DEVIL’S KNOT plays out. The film, directed by Atom Egoyan, is based on the same-titled book by Mara Leveritt, centring on the harrowing case of the three young boys murdered in Arkansas, 1993 and the subsequent controversial incarceration of the West Memphis Three (Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley Jr.).

The official first image of the true-crime thriller features Reese Witherspoon as Pam Hobbs, the mother of Steve Branch (who was one of the three children so brutally butchered) alongside Alessandro Nivola as Terry Hobbs, her husband and Steve’s stepfather. The film also stars Colin Firth, Bruce Greenwood, Dane DeHaan, Mireille Enos, Kevin Durand, Stephen Moyer and Elias Koteas.

If you’ve been keeping up-to-date on the tragic, ongoing case, you’ll know how much this image leaves a disturbing impression. DEVIL’S KNOT is expected later this year. We spoke to screenwriter Scott Derrickson a few months ago about his work on the film, which you can find HERE.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
