First Images From Steve McQueen’s ‘Twelve Years A Slave’

It’s a real testament to the brilliance of director Steve McQueen, that we no longer have to write “No, not that one” after his name. He’s become a legend in his own right with films such as HUNGER and SHAME to his name. His latest, 12 YEARS A SLAVE, looks to be just as impressive as those two films, and we’d bet the left side of our faces that you won’t be finding DJANGO UNCHAINED style violence and comedy here.

Chiwetel Ejiofor stars as an educated black man who is tricked away from his home and soon sold into slavery. Based on the autobiographical writings of Solomon Northup, the film will chart Solomon’s years as a slave. The following images give a great impression of McQueen’s continuing visual style, along with some detailed costume work.

12 YEARS A SLAVE is released in the US on 27th December and in the UK on 24th January. It stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Michael Kenneth Williams, Garret Dillahunt, Brad Pitt, and Quvenzhane Wallis.

Luke likes many things, films and penguins being among them. He's loved films since the age of 9, when STARGATE and BATMAN FOREVER changed the landscape of modern cinema as we know it. His love of film extends to all aspects of his life, with trips abroad being planned around film locations and only buying products featured in Will Smith movies. His favourite films include SEVEN SAMURAI, PASSION OF JOAN OF ARC, IN BRUGES, LONE STAR, GODZILLA, and a thousand others.
