The Fad Is Fading As 3D Films Hit A Record Low

Avatar

It seems like more and more movies are made in 3D these days but from what the box office tells us, it’s not paying off. On the 4th of July weekend in America, only 27% of DESPICABLE ME 2’s profits came from 3D tickets, the lowest share in the history of 3D films. This isn’t just limited to kids’ movies, as WORLD WAR Z only took 34% of its debut total from 3D tickets, and similarly THE GREAT GATSBY did even worse.

2009 and 2010 seemed to have been the most popular years for 3D, with action movies pulling in the greatest profits, such as AVATAR, with 71% of ticket sales being in 3D, ALICE IN WONDERLAND with 70% and TRON LEGACY with 82%. However, even in 3D’s heyday, family films were still worse off compared to action movies, with SHREK FOREVER AFTER’s ticket sales in 3D being at 60%, TOY STORY 3 also at 60% and THE LORAX at 52%.

James Cameron remarked last week:  ‘I do not think Hollywood is using the 3-D properly. MAN OF STEEL, IRON MAN 3 and all those movies should not necessarily be in 3-D. If you spend $150 million on visual effects, the film is already going to be spectacular, perfect.’

Do you always see movies in 3D and if so, why and what’s the benefits? Let us know!

I still do from time to time but I have to admit I see most 3D movies at home now. Cinema is expensive enough nowadays, we really don’t need to pay 3 euros more just for the added bonus of 3D.

It just shouldn’t be any extra at all, that’s the key here.

Also, a lot of films have been done just for the hell of it, as a selling point, they should know by now that audiences work it out and don’t like being conned for the same thing.

It was a fad all those years ago, and it is once again!

I don’t think 3D has reverted to being a fad. I believe most people do just like me. Like you said, they don’t like being conned and when a movie ticket costs the price of a Blu-Ray that can be replayed at will, they just feel like their money would be better spent on something else. So they go see the normal version on the big screen but they wait for the BR release to see it in 3D.

You think people have a 3D TV everywhere?

    I just don’t think so. ;p

That’s not what I meant. I know, I said “most people” but I should’ve added “interested in 3D.”

Good hope it fades away like it back in the 80’s I believe.
