WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS SPOILERS FROM CHRONICLE!

Dane DeHaan has gotten a stellar career going playing emotionally damaged teenagers with an upcoming role in THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, as well as a great turn in the mesmerising THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES and smaller roles in LINCOLN and LAWLESS. All of that is more or less on the basis of one film , that being Josh Trank’s smash-hit take of superheroes, CHRONICLE. The success of the first film did, not surprisingly, result in Paramount Pictures going ahead on producing a sequel. More surprising however were the recent news that Max Landis, writer of the first film, was replaced as writer on the sequel. Dane DeHaan has now spoken about that development, as well as whether he is involved in any capacity.

Well, it was really Josh Trank who was really the impetus,The movie was really his idea. I mean, Max certainly put it down on paper and he did a great job doing that, but it’s a story that lived within the mind of Josh certainly and I certainly give him credit for that.

But I have no idea what’s going on with the sequel. I haven’t gotten a single phone call regarding it. I am completely in the dark about what’s happening and I hope that if it is made that it honors the first one in terms of the passion that went into the first one and the passion that comes across on the screen. I think we really made something special and I think it was something special because there were a lot of really cool people involved that had a lot of passion that battled every day to make that movie work. I just hope that whatever they do with the second one—if there is a second one—honors the first one in that way.

Overall, he doesn’t seem too upset in regards to Landis leaving the project, although at the same time it doesn’t sound like he is too bothered by the sequel entirely. Of course it would always be unlikely that DeHaan would return as his character is more or less confirmed dead by the end of the original, however seeing as it is a superhero film stranger things have definitely happened. Personally I’m sceptical about CHRONICLE 2, not so much because Max Landis is off the project, but more whether it was a story you could necessarily do an organic sequel too without basically making it more of the same. It is at this point still unclear whether Josh Trank will return to direct the film, but considering his involvement in making THE FANTASTIC FOUR reboot, I find it unlikely.

DeHaan also had the following to say about his upcoming role as Harry Osborn.

It a really great experience and a really great luxury to have four months to prepare for a movie and then six months to shoot it,” he said. “I’m an actor who likes to work, you know? And I was able to work on this one more than I’ve been able to work on anything so I had a really amazing time shooting it. I worked with really great actors and a really great director and the script was really awesome, and I left completely fulfilled in a way that I didn’t think I would be and I think the fans are really going to love it.

So basically…nothing new really on that account, but I guess that is to be expected. I’m looking forward to seeing what he’ll do with the role as I think he’s a great actor, and Harry Osborn usually is a pretty good character.

So, one post to “learn” that DeHaan knows nothing about the sequel… What’s the point?
