With no news forthcoming over the weekend regarding STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, Disney’s D23 Expo event came across more of a damp squib, even with the appearance of Marvel’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER and THOR: THE DARK WORLD panels. While it’s expected Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill will reprise their roles of Han Solo, Princess Leia and Luke Skywalker respectively, we’re also hearing Ian McDiarmid could be set for a return as the evil Emperor Palpatine in the sequel being directed by J.J. Abrams. This despite his demise in RETURN OF THE JEDI.

McDiarmid has previously spoken of his love to return as the devious character so prominent in George Lucas’ much-maligned prequels, as well as playing a pivotal part in Richard Marquand’s aforementioned sci-fi sequel. We await with intrigue to see what the plot of the latest adventure in the epic space saga includes, which will come from a screenplay by Oscar-winner Michael Arndt.

STAR WARS: EPISODE VII is now confirmed for a summer 2015 release.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
