The fan community exploded at the announcement that Ultron would be the chief villain in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON, but as they put two and two together, they realised this would mean Ultron would not be an ANT-MAN creation, as it was in the comics. It’s been a controversial topic, and it’s easy to see why. ANT-MAN AKA Hank Pym suffers a great deal from knowing he created such a destructive force. It’s a burden he has to bare, and taking it away from him could mean a less dramatic arc in his cinematic future, and also could be a huge benefit for another character. Will it be a Tony Stark creation? Or perhaps a government weapon gone wrong (yawn)?
One thing that is clear is that Edgar Wright, who is set to direct ANT-MAN, has no qualms with handing over Ultron’s origins. Speaking to The Huffington Post, Wright said:
It was never in my script. Because even just to sort of set up what Ant-Man does is enough for one movie. It’s why I think “Iron Man” is extremely successful because it keeps it really simple. You have one sort of — the villain comes from the hero’s technology. It’s simple. So I think why that film really works and why, sometimes, superhero films fail — or they have mixed results — because they have to set up a hero and a villain at the same time. And that’s really tough. And sometimes it’s unbalanced.
I appreciate where Wright is coming from, but Ultron could have been hinted at in ANT-MAN for a reveal in THE AVENGERS 3 or the like. ANT-MAN is kind of a silly sounding character, but his chemistry and history with Ultron gave him real gravitas. Perhaps I’m just wary, not being a fan of Wright, but I hope ANT-MAN will have some great tales to tell.
