New Screenwriters For ‘The Grapes Of Wrath’ & ‘The Twilight Zone’ Adaptations

Letts1

The Steven Spielberg-produced (and possibly directed, following his exit from AMERICAN SNIPER) adaptation of John Steinbeck’s iconic novel THE GRAPES OF WRATH (previously an Oscar-winning 1940 film starring Henry Fonda) may have a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Tracy Letts as it’s screenwriter. Letts, best known for writing theatre hits KILLER JOE, AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY and MAN FROM NEBRASKA (as well as acting on-stage) is in final negotiations to draft the film version for Dreamworks Pictures. We’ll keep you posted on potential directing and acting talent.

Also, OBLIVION and TRON: LEGACY director Joseph Kosinski is expected to direct the new sci-fi thriller based on THE TWILIGHT ZONE. The film will drop the previous anthology premise in favour of a standard narrative, taking plot elements from various episodes from the hit series and making one cohesive storyline. Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way production company is behind the project, which has had a number of drafts written by Anthony Peckham, Jason Rothenberg. Rand Ravich and Joby Harold. We’re now hearing TV scribe Ari Eli Coleite is taking a shot at the screenplay.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

A lot of people I have talked to about this don’t want a remake. The real story of the family that was patterned after the Joads, is now available at tatepublishing.com under “Migrant Mother, The Untold Story, a Family Memoir. The Grandson Roger Sprague and his wife Oleta Kay have been telling their story at museums and the Steinbeck Center since 1997.
