It seems like an age since David Duchovny said he wouldn’t mind seeing Mulder up there on the big screen again for another X-Files and – if I’m honest – I wouldn’t mind another bout of escapism with Mulder & Scully either. So, now that creator Chris Carter has thrown in his desire for a comeback, is it time to get a little excited?
It’s no secret that those two and Gillian Anderson have stated their love and hope for one more outing. THE X-FILES: I WANT TO BELIEVE was greeted with a mixed response but Chris Carter now says it’s up to 20th Century Fox, or maybe a subsidiary? Carter said:
“It’s really up to 20th Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it. I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonization date has passed and that is something we wouldn’t ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.”
There’s been numerous shows and films influenced by The X-Files mythology and style, I hope they get the chance to finish off what they started but with studios knee-deep in profit this would be one hell of an ask. One person who might sway the execs is Mr Simon Pegg and although Chris Carter hasn’t officially met him, he knows that Spaced was littered with references and they actually tried to get him for the second film. He had this to say on a connection:
“Gillian worked with Simon Pegg on a movie and told me that he was a big fan. We actually thought about putting him in the second movie, but there was no part for him. I certainly would think about him if we were to go forward in any way.”
Get the Pegg! Bring back Mulder & Scully! Cameos galore! I guess we’ll see if the truth really is out there, in a studio sense…
