Legendary animation genius, Hayao Miyazaki, is set to retire after the release of his latest film, THE WIND RISES. The 72 year-old director of classics such as MY NEIGHBOUR TOTORO, PRINCESS MONONOKE, SPIRITED AWAY, and HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE has had one of the most impressive careers in the business. He is also noted for beginning the animation studio Studio Ghibli, which has produced the vast majority of Miyazaki’s pictures, as well as some other unforgettable classics such as GRAVE OF THE FIREFLIES.
The announcement of Miyazaki’s retirement came through Studio Ghibli president Hoshino Koji at the Venice Film Festival. This wouldn’t be the first time that Miyazaki has attempted to retire though. His previous attempts date back to 1997, when he announced PRINCESS MONONOKE would be his last film, and has suggested the same thing for almost every release since. THE WIND RISES has already made $80 million in Japan and will no doubt have an impressive international following. Miyazaki’s retirement would be a great loss to the animated world but he also leaves behind one of the most magical and inspirational filmographies to have ever existed.
