We’ve just received a fantastic first look at Meryl Streep’s character in Disney’s December 2014 release INTO THE WOODS. Streep plays the Witch who wishes to reverse a curse so that her beauty may be restored. The humorous and heartfelt musical, a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, explores the consequences of the quests of Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk and Rapunzel—all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife, and the witch who cast a spell on them.
Anna Kendrick and Chris Pine star as Cinderella and Prince Charming, and Emily Blunt, Tammy Blanchard, Lucy Punch, James Corden (who plays the Baker), and Tracey Ullman also star, along with Johnny Depp playing the Big Bad Wolf. Rob Marshall (CHICAGO) directs for the studio.
The film, which is based on the James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim 1987 Broadway musical of the same name, has a release date set for Christmas Day 2014 in the US, with a UK release date to be confirmed (I’d put a big bet on Boxing Day 2014).

Weirdly, I know this one really well having worked at the Open Air Theatre when it was on. Intrigued to see what they do, it can be a good mix of dark humour.

The problem is Streep’s beauty can’t be restored as it has never existed in the first place. But there’s another, much bigger problem: it’s a musical. A. Freakin’. Disney. Musical… Ouch!

You mean the man behind Sweeney Todd? That would have been by far Burton’s best post-Big Fish movie if those way too numerous songs didn’t utterly destroy the grim mood. And keep in mind he also worked on the Dick Tracy cheesefest, so…
