Solomon Northup Fights Back In First ’12 Years A Slave’ TV Spot

We’ve already had the first trailer, posterfeaturette, and clip from acclaimed HUNGER and SHAME director Steve McQueen’s harrowing, historical drama 12 YEARS A SLAVE. So, in keeping with our coverage of the star-studded biopic, we bring you the first television spot.

The film, like McQueen’s previous efforts, has been receiving high-praise following a number of festival screening and appears to be the early frontrunner for the upcoming award season. Lead Chiwetel Ejiofor is said to be outstanding as the unfortunate Solomon Northup, the well educated New Yorker who was beaten and sold into slavery in the 1850s and went on to document his shocking ordeal.

The supporting cast is also impressive with the director reunited with muse Michael Fassbender. There is also Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Dano, Garret Dillahunt, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Lupita Nyong’o, Adepero Oduye, Sarah Paulson, Brad Pitt, Michael Kenneth Williams and Alfre Woodard. 12 YEARS A SLAVE is scheduled to be released in the US on the 18th October and a UK date of the 24th January 2014.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.
