One of the best of the British film companies, Working Title, have announced that they’ve commenced filming on THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING, the story of the most brilliant and celebrated physicist of our time, Stephen Hawking, and Jane Wilde the arts student he fell in love with whilst studying at Cambridge in the 1960s.
The film is based on an original screenplay by Anthony McCarten and is inspired by Jane Hawking’s memoir, “Travelling to Infinity: My life with Stephen“, with Universal selling the film internationally. There’s an impressive cast assembled as well with Eddie Redmayne taking on the famous role alongside Felicity Jones. They’ll also be joined be David Thewlis, Emily Watson, Charlie Cox, Simon McBurney, Maxine Peake and Harry Lloyd.
What I’m particularly pleased about is that James Marsh is taking on the direction. He won an Academy and BAFTA award for the tremendous documentary, MAN ON WIRE. Last year, he also directed the critically acclaimed SHADOW DANCER starring Clive Owen and Andrea Riseborough was released.
Little was expected from Stephen Hawking, a bright but shiftless student of cosmology, given just two years to live following the diagnosis of a fatal illness at 21 years of age. He became galvanized, however, by the love of fellow Cambridge student, Jane Wilde, and he went on to be called the successor to Einstein, as well as a husband and father to their three children. Over the course of their marriage as Stephen’s body collapsed and his academic renown soared, fault lines were exposed that tested the lineaments of their relationship and dramatically altered the course of both of their lives.
Marsh’s creative collaborators on the film include director of photography Benoît Delhomme, production designer JP Kelly, hair and make-up designer Jan Sewell, costume designer Steven Noble and editor Jinx Godfrey.
THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING is filming in Cambridge and at other locations in the U.K. It’s in the very early stages, so we’re only expecting a 2015 release at the moment!
