A couple a days ago a rumour began circulating on the interweb that Tim Burton was set to return and direct a sequel to his cult supernatural comedy BEETLEJUICE and that Michael Keaton would return as the wisecracking ghoul. To be honest, it’s something that we expected given that recent Burton frequenter Seth Grahame-Smith was asked to pen the screenplay. However, we can now confirm the Gothic-maestro is now officially in talks to return to the director chair for BEETLEJUICE 2 and star Keaton is expected to follow.
It’s a project that’s been talked about for years while the 1988 film, centred on a couple of recently deceased ghosts who contract the services of the title character in order to remove the obnoxious new owners of their home, has gone on to become a cult classic. The original film also featured the likes of Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder.
As much as I am a fan of a lot of Burton’s work, I’m perhaps one of the few that never really “got” BEETLEJUICE. With a sequel officially on the way, maybe it deserves another look!

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

Beetlejuice was fun but it lacked the emotional impact of its successors. I wouldn’t mind a sequel if Burton was still able to recapture the spirit of the original, which is far from obvious considering the general lack of quality of his post-Big Fish input, but even if he was, it might just come a little too late. After all, Keaton is now 25 years older and ghosts aren’t supposed to age…
