‘National Treasure’ Director Says Threequel Expected Within Two Years

I’ve a real soft spot for director Jon Turteltaub’s ridiculously over-the-top mystery action franchise NATIONAL TREASURE. Yes, both were cheesy and more than a little unbelievable but there’s nothing wrong with a film wearing its heart on its sleeve and making no apologies for knowing what it really is. While a second sequel has been rumoured for quite sometime, the Disney-owned and Jerry Bruckheimer-produced series has failed to get off the ground.

While promoting his forthcoming comedy LAST VEGAS, Turteltaub has claimed the reason isn’t for the lack of trying. After all, both previous entries starring Nicolas Cage, Diane Kruger, Justin Bartha and Jon Voight, were huge box-office hits.

Asked why we haven’t seen the film after the huge success of the previous duo, he said:

If you can write the script, we’ll take it! It’s so damn hard to write a great historical mystery based on fact. It’s not for lack of trying. We want to do the movie. Disney wants to do the movie. We’re just having the damnedest time, writing it.

Pressed if he believes it will ever happen and if so how close, Turteltaub commented:

I do. I’ll bet that within two years, we’ll be shooting that movie. We’re closer. I’d say we’re about half-way there. It’s not only writing a great historical mystery, but we’ve gotta write something that has nothing to do with anything we’ve done before. The goal is to always have an original sequel, as silly as that sounds. We really want to make sure that the third one doesn’t just feel like a repeat of the first one, or one too many.

Would you be up for another Treasure hunt with Cage and crew? Do let us know your thoughts.

Craig was our great north east correspondent, proving that it’s so ‘grim up north’ that losing yourself in a world of film is a foregone prerequisite. He has been studying the best (and often worst) of both classic and modern cinema at the University of Life for as long as he can remember. Craig’s favorite films include THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION, JFK, GOODFELLAS, SCARFACE, and most of John Carpenter’s early work, particularly THE THING and HALLOWEEN.

I love good treasure hunt movies and the National Treasures are two of the best. I hope there is a third!
