Oscar Qualifying Run For Korean Animated Thriller ‘The Fake’

From Yeon Sang Ho, the director of the striking and creative THE KING OF PIGS, comes his latest feature THE FAKE. THE FAKE has a scintillating premise, in which a small town turns to its church leaders after news that their town will be flooded to make way for a dam. However, Min Chul, an ex-con, discovers the church leaders are criminals defrauding the town, but finds his reputation has become somewhat of a hindrance. THE FAKE has secured a week long run in LA starting today (15th November) as part of its Oscar qualifying run in order to aim for Best Animated Feature, the film will screen at CGV cinemas across Los Angeles.

Described as “A controversial exploration of blind faith and the distorted beliefs that define good and evil.” It’s very encouraging to see an adult animation, where the “adult” is also for a mature plot and not just sex and violence. It is also great to see it taking on the likes of MONSTERS UNIVERSITY and the like. Having already played the festival circuit, the film has  received some great reviews with Mark Adams from Screen Daily saying:

Yeon Sango-ho’s strikingly dark and violent follow-up to his pioneering South Korean animation THE KING OF PIGS (2011) is a similarly bleak and harrowing tale and confirms his reputation for making pure and uncompromising animation for grown-ups, again focusing on an unlikely subject for animation.

Sounds very promising, and you can check out the trailer below. Hopefully we’ll see a wider release in the future.
