We’ve just learnt the sad news that screenwriting guru Syd Field has died. Field was well-known by Hollywood as well as aspiring and professional film writers everywhere for his workshops, seminars and publications. He died on Sunday, November 17, of hemolytic anemia (a condition where the body destroys its own blood cells) at his Beverly Hills home surrounded by wife, family and friends. He was 77.
Field made it big with his first book, Screenplay, in 1979. He continued to publish, lecture and advise throughout his career and delivered his last key note speech in September 2013. Perhaps what he’ll be remembered for best is his explanation of the three act structure and plot points (moments of momentous or subtle change for the protagonist).
Famous supporters of Field and his teachings include screenwriter and director Frank Darabont (THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION) and writer and comedian Tina Fey (30 ROCK, MEAN GIRLS). Field’s books are still a staple of film schools across the globe and he was a regular on the lecturing circuit. He also worked as script consultant to 20th Century Fox, Disney Studios, Universal and TriStar Pictures.
