Here’s another totally unconfirmed name to chuck on the pile for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII – the current incarnation of DOCTOR WHO, Matt Smith.
Bleeding Cool cited a ‘fairly well-placed source’ as saying Smith had been in for a role in the sci-fi sequel. It’s unclear if that means an audition, a screen test or just a chat with director J.J. Abrams and creative consultant George Lucas.
Smith will make his Hollywood debut next year in Ryan Gosling’s first directorial effort HOW TO CATCH A MONSTER after he leaves DOCTOR WHO at Christmas to make way for Peter Capaldi’s Doctor.
X-MEN: FIRST CLASS actor Jason Flemyng also posted an image to his Instagram page which supposedly showed the script for STAR WARS: EPISODE VII, suggesting he’s up for a part in the film (or will at least be auditioning for it).
This isn’t the actual script, of course – that’s still not finalised, as far as we know. More likely, it’s a collection of sides written specifically for the audition, or else various strands of the plot which may not make it into the finished film. In any case, if he ever was up for a part, Flemyng may well have shot himself in the foot for posting that image, even if he has since removed it – Saoirse Ronan reckons she missed out on a part for blabbing about her audition.
Even if that is the case, Matt Smith at least would be an excellent addition to the STAR WARS universe in this writer’s opinion; he’s not quite a household name (at least outside of Britain) but that’s a common theme for STAR WARS – just look at the open casting calls.
Anyway, there’s another couple of names to keep the rumour mill churning over. Stay tuned to THN for more.
STAR WARS EPISODE VII will be directed by J.J. Abrams and is due for release on 18th December 2015.
