Of all the summer blockbusters released in 2013, the one that stood out for myself was X-MEN spinoff THE WOLVERINE. Part of that had to do with the rather inspiring promotional campaign which made the film look pretty poor (along with the fact it followed the truly awful X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE). So, I was rather surprised to learn James Mangold’s adventure was indeed a blast!
It was confirmed weeks ago that lead Hugh Jackman was brainstorming with Mangold on another Wolverine film. Of course, that super conclusion leading into Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST was near perfect and yesterday’s news that X-MEN: APOCALYPSE is next up, the future looked bright for Jackman’s adamantium-clawed mutant.
Well, he’s now clarified a few things about a possible return to the character post X-MEN:DOFP:
“I don’t know whether or not I will do this next movie. I am really proud of (The Wolverine) and I am excited to develop something with Jim Mangold from the beginning because that is a great ride. That’s exciting, to see what we come up with but I have a very high expectation of what it would need to be [for me to star in it] and if it doesn’t reach those, I won’t be doing it.”
So, the Oscar-nominee is sceptical about a return to his signature role he has now played seven(!) times. Should 20th Century Fox recast?

Recasting the role will eventually be inevitable. But if Jackman calls it quits, then that’s when I would do it. Studios should not recast the role as long as he wants to be in it. The one big way they could do this, involve Jackman in the recast so he can vouch for the next guy so the fan base won’t go nuts on the next guy… Oh .. and give him a cameo when that time comes around.
