I’ve loved Eric Bana’s work since he led Andrew Dominik’s crazy crime biopic CHOPPER, way back in 2000. I’m also one of the few that loved his portrayal of Bruce Banner’s in Ang Lee’s unfairly derided HULK. So I’m always intrigued to see what he’s involved with. He’ll next be seen in Peter Berg’s fact-based military thriller LONE SURVIVOR and while on the promotional trail for the film, he was also asked about working on Scott Derrickson’s upcoming supernatural thriller BEWARE THE NIGHT, which the writer/director has now confirmed will be retitled to the more clunky DELIVER US FROM EVIL.
Bana plays a detective who teams-up with priest Edgar Ramirez to hunt down a killer with ties to the occult. He’s what the actor had to say:
“I was again playing a real person, Ralph Saatchi, who was a particularly tough detective from the 46th Precinct in the Bronx, and we shot all through summer doing night shoots in the Bronx. It was an incredible experience. I’m playing a cop for the first time in my life and absolutely loved it and learned and saw things that really were quite challenging. It was a pretty amazing experience and it was great working with Scott. I’m a huge fan of his work. He has an amazing understanding of the genre and a respect for it, and I’m really excited to see that it’s been brought forward to a summer release. It’s very exciting for us. He really understands character and the same with ‘Sinister’ – Ethan’s performance in ‘Sinister’ is just fantastic – and he’s really a fan of character-driven horror cause it means a lot. This is one of the best characters I’ve ever read and I just jumped in and was obsessed with playing Ralph and it was amazing.”
DELIVER US FROM EVIL opens in the US on the 2nd July 2014 and the UK from the 22nd August. The film co-stars Olivia Munn, Sean Harris, Chris Coy and Joel McHale.
