As THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON nears its February/March start date for filming over here in the UK, we are beginning to get a few details on the films roster of superheroes. Last month Marvel Studios officially confirmed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen had joined the rest of Earths mightiest heroes as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Then, just yesterday, it was revealed that Don Cheadle will reprise his role as Colonel James Rhodes from IRON MAN 2 and IRON MAN 3 in the super-sized sequel.
Now a few more intriguing plot details have been uncovered for when the Avengers re-assemble in theatres for 2015. It is rumoured that English thespian Simon McBurney (TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY) is in line to play the new ‘J.A.R.V.I.S.’ for Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark, although he will be a real butler as opposed to an artificial intelligence within the Iron Man suit (voiced by Paul Bettany). The report also mentions that the butler may not actually be named Jarvis, but affectionately nicknamed it by Stark, which seems like the sort of behavior we have come to expect from the wisecracking character.
Given the events of IRON MAN 3, which ended with Stark losing his home and destroying his suits, it would make sense for him to have a real butler in THE AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON as a replacement for his technological losses and maybe some narrative comic relief. You can see an image of McBurney below:
Also some more tidbits have revealed more details on Rhodey’s involvement in the sequel, the report states:
‘Col. Rhodes, aka War Machine, has a key role in the conflict with Ultron that is the main focus of the sequel’.
It’s definitely good to hear that Stark’s loyal friend will have a part in Joss Whedon’s superhero extravaganza and from what the report says it seems likely Cheadle will have quite a sizable role too!
