THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG is one of the most anticipated films of 2013 and whilst we have already had some belters this year, Peter Jackson’s late entry to the party is definitely worth the wait. After the exhilarating first entry in Jackson’s prequel trilogy to his acclaimed LORD OF THE RINGS series and glowing early reviews it’s safe to say that the film had extremely high expectations. So how did THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG perform at the box office in its first weekend of release?
Well as it turns out Jackson’s second return to middle earth didn’t quite match up to the box office returns of the original film’s opening weekend last December. The film made an impressive $73.7 Million which didn’t top THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY’s $84.6 Million opening, however it did beat the opening weekend gross of 2003’s LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING. Despite the fact that some may view this opening as disappointing compared to its predecessor, THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG still has the title of fourth highest grossing December debut of all time.
Meanwhile Disney’s charming animated film FROZEN is still going strong with its worldwide total now at $266 Million and TYLER PERRY’S A MADEA CHRISTMAS has very disappointingly opened at third place to $16 Million which is just over half the opening of its predecessor. Katniss Everdeen’s incredible second round of bow and arrow wielding action has added an extra $32.7 Million to its worldwide haul for a current total of $740 Million in its fourth weekend of release. Finally Marvel’s smash hit adventure starring the one and only god of thunder in THOR: THE DARK WORLD has made $620 Million worldwide which is already far above that of the original film from 2011.
