Matthew Vaughn Left ‘X-Men: Days Of Future Past’ Because ‘It Wasn’t Exciting Enough’

Matthew Vaughn Star Wars

Matthew Vaughn’s dropping out of the X-MEN franchise left many fans disappointed, especially with the return of Bryan Singer, whose work outside the superhero franchise often had a mixed reception – but we never had a full explanation as to why he quit thus year’s DAYS OF FUTURE PAST… until now.

Speaking with Empire magazine, Vaughn revealed that the reason he left was ultimately due to a lack of excitement:

‘It didn’t excite me enough. The thing that was exciting about it was bringing all these actors together. What a cast! But I’ve worked with great actors and I just thought, ‘I’ve got to do my own thing.’

‘The script was great for X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, but I had THE SECRET SERVICE in my head, and this has always been [director Bryan Singer’s] machine. It’s come full circle.’

This is a bit contradictory, it has to be said. The script is good, the cast is good – so what’s not exciting about it? Maybe it’s a thinly veiled attempt to say that actually, the script didn’t inspire the greatest confidence in Vaughn. Maybe it was too big for him to tackle. Or maybe these are all libellous insinuations that we shouldn’t really publish…

Either way, it’s interesting to hear a snippet of truth behind why Vaughn dropped out of the project after directing X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, even if it doesn’t seem like he’s telling us everything. Why do you think Matthew Vaughn dropped out of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST? Let us know in the comments below.

Bryan Singer’s X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is released in the UK on 22nd May, 2014 while Matthew Vaughn’s THE SECRET SERVICE is due for UK release on 5th March, 2015.
