Uncut! Uncensored! Undubbed! Yes, everyone’s favourite monster of mass destruction, Godzilla, is lurching back to the big screen – in its original Japanese embodiment.
GODZILLA or GOJIRA is where it all started back in 1954. Directed by Ishirô Honda, the story of the giant radiation-mutated lizard was hugely popular with cinema audiences. However Honda’s original feature also suffered a bit of mutation itself when it reached Stateside, re-edited and dubbed for American audiences, with new scenes spliced in featuring Raymond Burr.
Now Rialto Pictures is issuing another re-release of the uncut, original feature in time for its 60th anniversary as well as, no doubt, the upcoming GODZILLA reboot from Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, directed by Gareth Edwards. The classic will run in movie theatres from April, including New York, New Mexico, Portland, Washington, Texas, Kentucky and Ohio. Rialto previously released the uncut version back in 2004 for the 50th anniversary with a limited theatre run, so we imagine there’ll be a similar buzz around this one. No news on a European run yet.
In the meantime enjoy the trailer below – although there’s a distinct lack of um…Godzilla in it (I’m sure the marketing team know what they’re doing).

Claire Joanne Huxham comes from the south-west, where the cider flows free and the air smells of manure. She teaches A-level English by day and fights crime by night. When not doing either of these things she can usually be found polishing her Star Trek DVD boxsets. And when she can actually be bothered she writes fiction and poetry that pops up on the web and in print. Her favourite film in the whole world, ever, is BLADE RUNNER.
