Matt Ryan Cast As ‘Constantine’ For NBC Pilot

Matt Ryan

After the CW took advantage of the current superhero-craze with SMALLVILLE, ARROW and the upcoming FLASH spin-off series, Fox soon acquired the rights to a Batman-themed prequel series GOTHAM. And now NBC is looking to get in on the action with yet another DC Comics adaption in the form of CONSTANTINE, which was also the basis for the 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves.

NBC have ordered a pilot for the supernatural drama series from Daniel Cerone (THE MENTALIST) and David S. Goyer (THE DARK KNIGHT). You can read a plot description for CONSTANTINE and its title character below:

‘a working-class Londoner with rakish good looks, scruffy blond hair, deadpan humor, and signature trench coat, who has been studying the dark arts since he was a teenager. When the daughter of a late friend is targeted by demons, Constantine steps in to save her’.

Now it has been announced that welsh actor Matt Ryan (pictures above) has been cast as John Constantine for the pilot. Although Ryan is a relatively fresh face, he has previously starred in CRIMINAL MINDS: SUSPECT BEHAVIOUR and most recently performed motion capture work for ASSASSINS CREED IV: BLACK FLAG. Although I have no prior knowledge of the comic in which the series will be based on, the premise sounds like an exciting mix between SUPERNATURAL and GRIMM which could prove to be a sizable hit and entertaining weekly watch if handled correctly. Ryan also has the right physical appearance and hopefully charming sense of humour to carry CONSTANTINE and more importantly captivate viewers.
