‘The Wire’ Creator To Write Martin Luther King Miniseries

david simon set for martin luther king project

It has been revealed that David Simon, creator of HBO’s The Wire is set to adapt an upcoming miniseries based on the life of Martin Luther King.

The six-hour HBO miniseries, which will be titled America: In The King Years is based on the popular book trilogy by Pulitzer Prize winning author Taylor Branch. Oprah Winfrey is on board as a producer.

Winfrey’s company Harpo Films had approached HBO to develop the book series back in 2010 with playwright Robert Schenkkan writing the project, but it looks like Simon is set to write at least one episode, and  plan the overall series with his Treme co-creator Eric Overmyer.

This isn’t the only Martin Luther King project Winfrey’s company is set to produce either, Harpo Films will also be backing Paramount Pictures SELMA, a drama about Luther King’s landmark rights campaign that is seen as the height of the civil rights movement.

But the biggest question of all is – would do you see in the role of Martin Luther King? Let us know below.
