We all know of the numerous ways to watch films online these days but THN highly recommend BFI Player that offers a mix of 7 new channels and various collections. You’ll get a whole mix of must-see cinema, silent classics, festival exclusives and rare footage from the national film archive, which really does bring a unique and diverse range of content to the video-on-demand platform. Plus, the important part, there’s no subscription fee, so you only pay for what you watch.

If you’re also a bashful cinephile, then you can now breathe a sigh of relief because Lars von Trier’s NYMPHOMANIAC (Volumes I and II) and Alain Guiraudie’s STRANGER BY THE LAKE are both available to stream. With each film priced between £7.50 and £10, this new option will bring comfort to those who are desperate to see either of the controversial dramas, but simply can’t face the embarrassment of buying a ticket or spending the duration of the film in the company of others. I also back SHAME to make an appearance soon!

Offering a discreet and ingenious solution to the thoroughly British problem of sparing blushes, the BFI Player is featuring the films as part of a whole host of brand new content for 2014, along with several other critically acclaimed and classic films.

Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac (Volumes I and II)

Following on from 2009’s Antichrist and 2011’s Melancholia, von Trier completes his ‘Trilogy of Depression’ with this highly-anticipated and much-debated erotic odyssey. Split into two volumes and set over eight chapters, NYMPHOMANIAC pushes the boundaries of erotic cinema in groundbreaking fashion, whilst maintaining von Trier’s reputation as one of the most visually distinctive and ambitious filmmakers of his time.

Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Shia LeBeouf  and introducing newcomer Stacy Martin, NYMPHOMANIAC  tells the story of  Joe (Gainsbourg), a self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who is found badly beaten one evening by Seligman (Skarsgard). After taking her to his flat to tend to her wounds, he listens intently as Joe, over the next eight chapters, recounts the erotic experiences of her eventful life, from her birth up until the present day.

Directed by: Lars von Trier

Starring: Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stacy Martin, Stellan Skarsgard, Shia Lebeouf, Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Connie Nielsen.

Alain Guiraudie’s Stranger by the Lake- Also available now!

This new, darkly humorous drama from Guiraudie marks a slightly more conventional direction for the often idiosyncratic filmmaker. STRANGER BY THE LAKE focuses on ten days at a local cruising spot for gay men, exploring the torrid, complex relationship between quiet, thoughtful Franck (Pierre Deladonchamps) and the attractive, dangerous Michel (Christophe Paou).

Directed by: Alain Guiraudie

Starring: Pierre Deladonchamps, Christophe Paou, Patrick d’Assumçao
