The world collectively rolled their eyes when it was announced that one of the most famous franchises in history would be ‘rebooted’ in 2015. TERMINATOR is one of the most iconic films of all time and its sequel TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, is probably one of the only sequels to outmatch its outstanding predecessor in almost every way. The two subsequent sequels that followed were less than spectacular to say the least…and so here we are with a newly minted TERMINATOR series due in a mere year and a half, widely rumoured to be titled TERMINATOR: GENESIS.
Ordinarily I would beg for Hollywood to leave this franchise alone after the terrible TERMINATOR 3: RISE OF THE MACHINES and TERMINATOR: SALVATION, however this new film will see the return of Arnold Schwarzenegger himself. The chance to see THE Terminator return for potentially the last time is definitely a tantalising one, especially if the film can make up for the two previous instalments. Of course with Schwarzenegger returning however, it does beg the question as to how much of a ‘reboot’ the film really is, with many believing that it will re-create several key moments from the first two films.
We recently discovered that Emilia Clarke (GAME OF THRONES) will play Sarah Connor and Jason Clarke (DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES) will play John Connor, in a plot clearly utilizing time travel once again. Then late last month it was announced that Jai Courtney (A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD) has been cast as Kyle Reese, a character originally played by Michael Biehn in James Cameron’s original TERMINATOR. Now Courtney has spoken about his casting and the (justified) scepticism that surrounds reboots of beloved classics. You can read the interview below:
‘I’ve always had a bit of scepticism about something being rebooted. I remember when [A Good Day to] Die Hard came around a few years ago, I was like, ‘Really? They’re gonna make another one?’ and then I found myself in it and totally invested in it. I think it’s healthy to have that [scepticism] because you want it to be something [special], you want to keep that eye for quality sharp’.
‘But when I read this, I was pretty into it and the story’s cool. It’s attached a great cast as well. I think Emilia Clarke’s wonderful and she’s got a lot of support and stuff behind her. And Jason Clarke as well I’m a big admirer of so, yeah, it’s gonna be really cool, man. I’m looking forward to doing that, and running around with Arnie won’t be too bad’.
TERMINATOR: GENESIS is due to begin filming in Louisiana next month with Alan Taylor (THOR: THE DARK WORLD, GAME OF TRHONES) at the helm. The film is due for release on 1st July 2015 and you can check back with us for more updates on filming and casting announcements as we get them.
