There’s an old saying handed down by the mystics that suggests “Those who have not read a Goosebumps book, are probably not worth knowing.” It’s a great quote to live by and can fully prepare people for the world. Hopefully the latest film adaptation will bring more people back to the books, thus making more people worth knowing. Starring Jack Black as the books’ author R.L. Stine, the film has recently begun principal photography and will be shooting in and around Conyers, Madison and Atlanta, Georgia.
Like many of the Goosebumps books, the plot sees a young boy called Zach (Dylan Minnette) move to a new town where he befriends Hannah (Odeya Rush). It soon turns out that Hannah’s father is R.L Stine, who, far from being an author, uses his books to lock away the monsters from his imagination. Of course, Zach manages to let them loose. Hopefully many of the great monsters from the Goosebumps franchise will show up, with Slappy the ventriloquist dummy an obvious favourite.
The books have shifted over 350 million copies worldwide, and the plot looks to integrate as much from the books as possible in a fairly original plot. Hopefully the film wont forget to be a little scary and we can but hope it looks to films of the 1980s rather than today’s schlock. Goosebumps was never terrifying, but the books and TV show could be unsettling at times.
GOOSEBUMPS is set for a March 2016 release. It stars Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Amy Ryan, Ken Marino, and Jillian Bell.
